The issue is
that at least before Gentoo 2005.0 there have been troubles with compiling 32 bit binaries in the amd64 bit environment without using a 32 bit chroot (which is a royal pain). And there are few Portage 32-bit binary packages (Firefox and OOo are there, but not much else). Whereas SuSE, although I've noticed that a lot of what's in the x86-64 distro is really 32-bit, at least there are no compile issues and no need for a 32-bit chroot.

Really all that I need 32-bit for on an everyday basis is Flash and win32 codecs, because they don't work with 64 bit compiled binaries, so I need a 32-bit Firefox and MPlayer. And Firefox is there, but MPlayer is not so I have to waste 2 gigs of hard drive for a 32 bit chroot environment. Also there are other 32-bit only programs I've wanted to try but can't (I did get wine to work, but that was more of a proof of concept experiment because I don't use or need win32 programs anymore).

Plus I want to see what's on the other side of the fence. wink
