So you're saying the millions of hard drives in Canada are illegal? Geez.. we must all be criminals up here.

The law is, and always has been, copying of copyrighted works is legal, provided you do the copying yourself (ie. you borrow a CD from a friend, copy it and return.. legal, but a friend burns a CD for you and gives you the burned copy.. illegal).

To compensate artists for potential lost sales, a levy is placed on every "blank audio recording device".

There is nothing really new about this.. except they've increased the levies to keep track with the increased number of downloads that take place due to P2P networks. It's not a perfect system, but it's several orders of magnitude better than suing 12 year olds and violating the privacy of "potential file sharers" without a court deciding there is sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial..
