Bashing policians is third Canadian national sport.
Politicians tread lightly in Canada because we Canadians actually take them to task and unlike the US, we don't treat our politicians with reverence. (Well, at least we certainly don't treat the PM like the Americans treat the Prez.. heck, how many pies has Chretien taken in the face? I mean - he's been on Mike Bullard for heaven's sake...:)

When the original levy came out, the Copyright Board tried to sneak it past by buring the announcement in Hansard. Then a bunch of us actually noticed it and started yelling. Copps tried to cut off debate on the grounds that we hadn't submitted out comments in time - and so we started a massive writing campaign to complain to our MPs and it worked - a few months later Copps reopened the review and we got the levy reduced and limited.

In the second round, the recording artists got the upperhand because the storage media associations screwed up with their arguments (they tried to argue the levy was a bad thing and that the music industries numbers were wrong, rather than providing their own numbers and methodology to argue against the SOCAN numbers).

This time, it looks like they had their act a bit more together and we got off with a small increase and most of what SOCAN wanted thrown out.

It works because we're there, watching the government and getting involved. It works because we treat our politicians exactly as they are - guys we hire to represent *us*.. all of us. And when they stop doing that - we kick them out. happy

Democracy. It works when you get involved. happy
