Netscape, AOL, and MS
I don't fault AOL for what Netscape has become. MS killed it by illegally tying their browser app to the OS, then further obfuscating the issue by "integrating" it into the OS. IE's capabilities exceeded Netscape's before AOL bought them, but only because MS killed their revenue stream, and hence THEIR ability to innovate. By the time AOL bought Netscape, it was clear AOL was just trying to "buy" users. What AOL did to the Netscape sites afterward only confirmed that they were never serious about developing the browser to compete with MS (I suspected they wanted to kill Netscape from the getgo, it is easier to support one non-standard browser than two, and for all it's good points, Netscape wasn't standards compliant).

Fortunately, Mozilla is now the spiritual inheritor of Netscape, and AOL has essentially divorced themselves from it. They will innovate and move browsers and the Internet forward.
