Linux is Modular
Do an lsmod on a linux box and verify this for yourself.

Linux and friends are trying to load more into the kernel but also try and keep the kernel stripped down as much as possible. Reasons for this are quite simple. How many light weight linux devices do you see compared to light weight windows devices?

Examples are routers, PDAs, gateways, media players, firewalls, and phones.

With the exception of PDAs, I see linux predominant in pretty much everything else.

Why is this? Because Linux can be stripped down so far.
