Companies that compete, sometimes have to cooperate.
And, if Microsoft wants their OS to run on all of the various VMs, they need to cooperate. That said, because Xen is open source, they might not cooperate. They might see more value in blocking open source than in being on all platforms. But, that could hurt them as the competition will be running Linux on Xen and getting a lot more bang for the buck. I don't see Microsoft getting much of the utility computing market. People want to be able to do their own tweaking rather than begging Microsoft, and when you have 10,000 serveres, MS gets very, very, pricey. Add to that the licensing restrictions, and Microsoft is going nowhere fast in utility computing.
