Bad sample
Perhaps you are right...but the guy who couldn't plot data point blank told me he wouldn't use Excel because of Gates. The guy is in his late twenties with a brand new PhD in CS. The other guy, who used 3 weeks to make a presentation using Tex, also hates Gates. When I was a postdoc years back in a protein folding group, I met the same type (script writing command prompt users) many times over. I only find these kind of people when I'm in places that use Linux/Unix platforms. I don't really find windows users cursing out Macs and Jobs. I do find windows users wondering why an Office 2000 VBA code won't run in Office 2002, which is a pain.

As for supercomputer reliability, I have a feeling that most supercomputers are very unreliable, and are constantly down for both scheduled and unscheduled maintanance.

As for PCs, my life gotten so much easier with XP. I have yet to see a blue screen of death on any of my home/work PCs. I will admit that I have had to reboot the machines once in a while to make upgrades/patches take effect--seems like most virus writers gun for the OS with the largest market share. My office mate, on the other hand, has seen the beach ball of death on his dual processor G5 quite a few times while trying to make his Mac talk to various external controllers. He also keeps a PC around to run certain software packages that only run on PCs. Regardless, he was formerly and exclusive a Wintel guy, and he tells me there is a lot about his Mac that he likes...enough so that he replaced his home PC with a Mac.

Most people I know, from secretaries to seasoned physicists, like using a PC/Mac windows user interface. They use Word, Excel and Powerpoint. They want to email their files to people who can open their files, or move their files transparently around a large network with their mouse. Most physicists I know use Excel to do basic calculations. Heavier stuff is done in Fortran or Visual C++, or Matlab or Mathematica. They typically don't want to go out and search on the net for a plot utility.

AA

PS--Your name sounds like Marvin Minsky
