Be watchful however...

Werewolf makes an intelligent argument. However, considering past actions of large corporations (including microsoft) it is natural for many to be wary of their motives.

There is a lot of pressure on Microsoft to comply with various entities' (ie. the entertainment industry with digital rights management, etc.) demands of what should be implemented into future OSs.

Trying to balance these demands with what consumers want is a very thankless task. And on top of that they have to worry constantly about lawsuits and government scrutiny (not that they should not be scrutinised).

All in all, they seem to have done a better job than most could do (regardless of their motives) and produced a mostly user-friendly product that gets the job done with a minimal amount of downtime.

They haven't even complained (very loudly) about all the pirated copies of their OS which are in use everywhere---very good business strategy IMO (it actually helps them control the market).

Whatever Microsoft's ultimate motives may be, I don't think people should worry about any extreme behaviour (such as taking over the internet) any time soon. With all the watchdogs around (including government) it's doubtful they could pull off such a stunt.

Going back to Werewolf's comment: "They are in business to make money." It is in their best interests to try and please the consumer. So far, they have done this rather successfully. You can bet the minute they cease in this course, some other entity (maybe linux) will fill the void.
