The mhz race is over
but your battery in your backup will be replaced every 4 years. A cpu is the longest lived component if everything is taken care of. I have a PP200 w/ 192mb of ram running FreeBSD 4.9 as a server. It has no gui but files backup pretty fast. It is too slow to run that OS with a gui.

What would you want to tinker with the bios for? It is all ironed out for that particular mobo. You cannot add modern interfaces to it without the manufacturer electrical drawings. They will not give them to you. Why would you want to? It would cost a lot of money to tinker with old iron. $65 buys a modern mobo. You can build an entire box for $300. Less in volume.
