After the browser was surreptitiously changed to FireFox...
... I expect that at some point the user had to get to Windows Update and was given the chance to accept IE as the default. Knowing no difference, the user agreed and changed back.
This may be happening to a number of inexperienced FireFox users. No evidence, but it's possible.

I appreciate the irony that vulnerabilities in Windows may be an effective defense of IE.
