Eclipse lights up Java crowd

I like Eclipse.

It has been a year since I last retried NetBeans so bare with me.

First off, NB and Eclipse are both great dev tools. Both have some niche features the other lacks. But overall, they are both very similar. I personally prefer Eclipse. I tried both, but fell over to Eclipse.

With Eclipse, you get to build your own development environment from the very basics. NB is mostly already set up. By working through the setup cost for Eclipse, you earn a personalized, efficient, and low bloat workbench.

Eclipse is very independent of a single company and NB is pretty much under the management thumb of Sun. IMO, that isn't a good thing as I think Sun's biggest weakness is overall management.

I also found NB' use of Swing to be much slower than that of SWT for Eclipse. Not to mention Swing looks horrible. I been hearing that this is no longer true, and I guess it shouldn't count as a factor anymore.

Eclipse's overall architecture is much more modular and efficient than NB. And I think NB can learn a few things from it. The way I see it, this makes Eclipse easier to maintain. It allows for more powerful plugins and extensions. And it can expand into other dev environments easier.

In the end, you should use which ever tool fits your needs, for me that was Eclipse. Although I remember missing one or two features from NB, they weren't enough to switch me over. I am sure this has changed over the year, but I have already gotten used to Eclipse, and am quite happy with it. To each his own.
