I think that IBM smells blood here.
They are increasing their activity on many open source projects lately. This will prevent Microsoft from taking over the web with .NET and cause them lots of problems trying to maintain the monopoly.

And, the cool factor IBM gets out of these projects to help open source is priceless. On a cool factor scale of 1 to 10, Microsoft is down to a 1 or 2. They had a 9 or 10 at one time.
