You could be right. Heck, I'm even a fan of linux.

But I don't think they would handle the volume of data (one file alone is 153 gigabytes), the connectivity requirements (realtime pricing calls to 70 mainframes scattered across the us and canada), the reliability requirements (zero downtime- we have had under 3 hours of unscheduled downtime in 4 years), etc.

A huge farm of small might handle it, but the central database is going to remain an issue.

Also, linux was not ready for prime time when we first went live. Java was barely able to handle it back then.
