PHP is...
PHP is the latest language "so simple a non programmer can use it".

In 3-5 years PHP it will be where Java is today because web pages DO send confirmation pages, they DO connect to multiple servers for data, they DO validate logins against external active directory services, etc. etc. etc.

These problems are complicated. It sounds like PHP takes care of some of the database connection chores for you. It's probably worth learning.

My everquest guild's website runs on PHP and maintains a complex point system for a few hundred members.

My business's order entry site runs on java and supports 1500 cuncurrent users on multiple web servers connected to mainframes.

Different problems- different solutions.

Java's significant benefit is that it runs anywhere (and if you haven't used it lately- it runs anywhere FAST these days). Several of my personal applications are now java- most of the rest are opensource. I'm going to be exiting windows- I don't like the direction they are headed.

PHP will probably run anywhere also. It will probably have lots of new libraries and features added until it is unbelievably hairy as a language.
