So your problem is understrnading of the theory ?
``If you are serious about working with RDBMS's then it is important to understand the theory that lies behind them. If you understand the theory then you know why SQL is inadequate.''

Data models (such as the relational one) help you design/organize a particular data management environment with respect to the logical relationships among the data. That is they force you to understand how entities are logically connected and how valid operations can be defined on those relationships.

Although I agree that the initial RDM was restricted to relations, the functional dependency techniques force you to decompose the tables in order to avoid the notorious data redudancies. In the last 10+ years the RDM has been extended with nested and aggregate objects in a way that is consistent with the FD models. Progress in Query optimization techniques has relieved the execution cost burden from SQL queries. Additionally, there are distributed RDBMs for large / distributed DBs. On the heterogeneous side, there are several APIs (ODBC, JDBC, etc) that allow you to tie together diffferent data stores in a relatively consistent fashion.

You can do ALL of the above via SQL or extensions, such as, PL/SQL and stored procedures or embedded SQL.

What is the problem with SQL? Do you know of other DB envirnments that can provide all of the above functionality? Please let us know.
