And as I said in my post, I'm not trying to do any of that.

Which doesn't help with finding and removing bugs in MS software, which was one of the benefits claimed for "opening" it.

Nor does it offer customers any way to confirm that the source that's under that glass actually corresponds to the binaries they're running. One of the claimed benefits for "shared source" is precisely that it shows the lack of backdoors etc. so the inability to compile screened source negates one of the key stated purposes.

I don't have to make (or want to make) ANY changes to SQL Server to do any of that.

Your loss. A number of EDA programmers I know find that instrumenting the underlying library or even kernel layers does wonders for their time-to-market. That's why they were doing development on Linux for years before their companies officially supported it.
