A good point...
Even the jerks within the record industry will admit readily that the money has never been with the CD sales, but with the concerts and the licensing fees for all the trinkets and t-shirts and ringtones, etc..

Celine has gotten herself one sweet deal in Vegas because she gets a cut of the take plus she has people hawking her stuff right outside the arena door. Heck, she's even selling Chryslers to make a buck.

Even Led Zeppelin got into the picture by licensing "Rock and Roll" for Cadillac. That generated some renewed interest in the music for people who would otherwise have never listened to their material. I actually sought out some of the music from commercials (Dirty Vegas, the guy whose "Pink Moon" was played in a Volkswagon commercial...)

Meanwhile, I don't like the idea that some idiot can drop what has been named quite rightly a Trojan on my machine. It opens the door for all sorts of abuse on the part of the record and movie industries, not to mention the dinosaurs at the RIAA and the MPAA.

I know there is a lot of music out there that has been freely posted for distribution to get some exposure. Imagine what would happen if some troll at a label decided he liked it and had someone engineer the file to pop-up and pay his company (or worse yet, himself). It could also be done by any little code-kiddie to the same ends. Digital robbery and no means to catchit until some serious bucks had been transferred to some 18-year old's Cayman Islands bank account.

My advise for now: If you must buy, go ahead and play at the on-line stores, whatever the format. Download and then get one of the freeware converters to make it the format you need.
