My Wish
actually, hta's are used in a lot of places to distribute bona fide 'micro-applications' within a web interface that can bypass the securities mentioned in a fashion that emulates programs installed on a local system.

hta's really are quite useful. i use them quite often to distribute toolbox packages and small applications, like a media-based portable spam detector that uses activeX controls to interface with outlook to do do its job. these controls, which normally would end up being denied access because of IE's script and controls security, are considered safe applications, which allows these controls to be registered and unregistered completely through script.

the real added visual plus of hta's is that you lose all reference to the open hta as an IE window. instead, windows recognises it as a separate application. this allows you to tailor your application with many of the same features as a standard app UI. you can design any interface controls you like, because they can be constructed entirely with html and scripting.

my wish and hope is that since MS has had this technology freely available for so long, that in addition to not pushing the patent, that they will release it to W3C and begin a standardisation process so that all systems will be able to use them. this is something they have done in the past with several other web-related patents.
