This is a joke, isn't it?
Surely this isn't patentable? A way of putting commands into HTML then "running" it in a reduced-functionality "browser"?

So where does that leave me if I create, say, a Linux browser that will run korn shell script commands embedded in an HTML document? Or even a browser that runs JavaScript inside an HTML document? Or even an e-commerce application that accepts SOAP inside an HTML document and presents it to the user without actually starting a "browser"?

Has anyone noticed that MS does not even ship a browser any more? IE is no longer a product distinct from Windows. So have they patented any application that runs scripting inside HTML that isn't a full-fledged browser? What defines a browser?

If this idea doesn't prove the stupidity of software patents, then nothing will.

Incidentally, this is not an anti-MS post. They are probably doing this out of pure cynicism to prove the US Patent Office has no idea about what a software patent is, and therefore shouldn't be awarding them.
