its a great distro
i personally think everyone should buy it, for sake of getting money to them to make it better, but you really dont need to.

1.) You can get install CDs for free, but i think you just mean from SuSE/Novell. You can download SuSE Linux Personal version ISOs for free from SuSE, but the Pro version has been FTP or purchase for quite awhile, though they have just recently made DVD ISO of Pro version available.

2.) It is only "TOTAL CRAP" if you have a bad internet connection really, but i agree ISOs are much easier, and this FTP install method has always seemed like a stupid idea to me.

3.) how is it unreasonable to have an option available that is not required?
