Perhaps the others are irrelevant. IBM is a big shop with a lot of patents on a lot of stuff. Maybe the patents they have relating to MQSeries is not relevant to a Linux OS. Not every patent IBM holds is a base OS level feature and IBM would be foolish in this day and age to empty their gun to no purpose.

In any event, your argument sounds a lot like those a few weeks ago lambasting Bill Gates for his charitable giving because he was an unworthy source or it was a drop in his bucket. 500 patents are significant and relevant even if everything you say is true. It still gives Linux a great deal of additional support and leads the "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" croud to the water. It won't make them drink, but it gets them to the well.
