...we can patent software. I don't see Airbus giving away inivated designs to ther compitition, but you must give away inivated code to your competition? If I made a breakthrough in a fuel injection unit for my BMW (faster car/half the fuel)I can patent it and get people to by from me as competitors don't have it.

Yet, with code, If I can't stop my competitor from taking it and enhancing his product, why buy from me?

Nextel's in business as they had a 10 year patent on their walkie/talkie feature, but would they have ever had a chance if Sprint and Verizon were allowed to incorporate that feature into their phones (as they are doing now) if they were allowed to take it a week after Nextel came up with it?

What these people are saying is "we woke up late to the whole software thing and we now want an unfair advantage. We want for free what the rest of the world spent time and money creating..."

As a small company, why pay a salary, benifits, vacation and what not to a bunch of people to
come up with a great idea that will get people to purchase (I need to make money to do pay these people) my software, when IBM can come along, take it and say "stay with us and you can have this great idea they're charging for, for free"?
