In a way this is a double stroke for IBM:
1 - They finally can take a whack at Microsoft and start to errode their dominance on the corporate desktop, which in time will translate to home desktops. So if they play it right, IBM will be able to payback in spades the mistreatment Microsoft gave them with OS2. And do so without using legal tactics.
2 - This will provide a catalyst for other developers to port applications over to Linux, thereby breaking that myth / barrier as well.
