You said, "First, business would be much better served by a thin client architecture."

What business? Who's architecture? You make a sweeping generality based on licensing cost. The idea of the thin client reached its peak 8 years ago and never got traction because of factors to numerous to list here. Unless you know something about all those businesses that the CIOs and CEOs don't, how can you say their decision is wrong?

"Second, the capabilities XP do far exceed the home users requirements, and it's stability is relative to 95,98 is not in question. It's stability next to Linux and OSX is however."

We agree on the first part of this. On the second part, I would make two points: XP is so stable that it may be more likely that a home user would experience a loss of data by an application error, power failure, or two-year old playing with the computer before Mommy saved her <ocument. Using NT, Win 2000, and XP over the past 6 years at the office, I've experienced exactly 2 OS lockups. This is more than enough reliability for the home user.

"Third MS's focus on security has not paid off and new threats and exploits are arriving weekly."

Yes, and many of the most serious threats today are aimed at users who can't recognize a phishing scam when they see it. But follow this logic: if most of the latest threats are common to both XP and Win 2000, it's taken an army of hackers more than 5 years to find the security hole.

"The number of PC viruses stands at 50,000 and counting, OSX has 0. Apple wins again."

Yup. CP/M also had 0. Your point is? I haven't had a virus on my XP or Win 2000 boxes in more than 3 years.

"This new peak under the Longhorn skirt is just more damage control from a company that has always lacked the talent to innovate."

Yes, and if Apple had had the brilliant an innovative idea of creating an OS for generic hardware, MS wouldn't have had to bail them out a few years ago.
