I've said this before and will say it again...
Patents, the way they are (not) legislated today, are a Bad Thing and hinder innovation.

The big players can nowadays buy patents for things they obviously did not invent, and use them to destroy competition.

While, fundamentally, there actually is nothing new with the principle, we all need to face the fact that patents WILL be ABUSED by large corporations, and NOBODY will be safe - including those who think that their couple of patents they worked so hard for will protect them.

But fortunately, there are ways to deal with it, such as simply publishing, like a poster brilliantly mentioned below, at least until the present situation is solved.
