I remember when Borland stepped in...
...and made the claim that several "look-and-feel" copyrights in dispute belonged to them and they gave the rights to that look-and-feel to developers that use their Borland development products as they were included libraries.

It seemed that several of the companies suing used the Borland libraries with the Borland LAF. These companies started suing other companies for stealing their LAF copyright until Borland sued them for stealing their copyright. Not for stealing the LAF which Borland had licensed to the developers who used their product but stealing the copyright claiming it to be theirs when it was a derivative work belonging to Borland.

Suddenly, the Borland development suites took off because developers knew that if they used the Borland LAF, no one else could sue them. It seemed that every program that came out after that had the ubiqutious Borland buttons, checkboxes, radio buttons, etc., for quite sometime until MS released their own libraries for general use by Windows programers.

Mostly, they did this to curb the recognition of the Borland icons so that they could sell more MS dev. suites.

Epilogue

Then Borland got rid of Kahn and went downhill wink
