OSS Doesn't Need To Take That Abuse
There are many large companies that do in house programming (such as Boeing) that have little interest in stock piling patents. These companies are threatened by patents like everyone else, except large computer companies. OSS leaders need to skillfully campaign against patents by, among other things, pitting these titans against large computer companies. If OSS lead a sophisticated campaign rousing the concern of a cross section of constituencies (small and medium sized computer companies; consultants; schools and universities; large and other companies that do in house programming, etc.) it could conceivably defeat software patents through new legislation in Congress. OSS leaders in fact could also rouse companies in every industry that deals with IP (including the entertainment industry), and let them realize that if software patents become broadly accepted, pretty soon songs, literature, and other IP may begin becoming patented soon after. OSS doesn?t need to accept the crumbs this guy from HP is throwing.
