Mischaracterization of positions
" Proponents of the directive say it would simplify trade by standardizing national patent laws involving inventions that use software and by clarifying what, exactly, can and can't be patented"

The mandate to the Commission was to unify European patents system which is a necessary thing.

The problem is the *wording* they want for the first time permits software patents, non technical patents whose only technical aspect is they are done in software (think one click this and shopping list that) and business process patents.

The Parliament spotted this weakness, JURI's lawyers confirm the problem and Parliament made amendments to fix it. So far so good, the amended patent directive would have been a good version.

So a truer statement is the pro-directive side want wording that that lets them patent non-technical fluff like the USA does and business processes.

Great for lawyers, not good for technological progress.

Let him sack 800 Navison staff, someone else will hire them, he'll lose Navisons customers and lose market to SAP.

Its no different from Nokia threatening job losses if the council didn't vote it through, then after they got the vote in Ireland, they announce job losses...
