Fine, if you want to play it that way....
"What can Windows do for the thinking people that the other OSes lack?"

Windows can install itself with only a few clicks of the nmouse without requiring them to make any desicions whatsoever because it does not offer them too many choices except language, timezone, and other simple things. Wait, many Linux distros offer install scripts that do not require feedback.

It offers me a platform that costs very little because traditional hw jobs are now done in the software, requiring less expensive hw but puting a greater tax on my system resources and decreasing stability. Now I have to think which scenario will be more cost effective for me.

It integrates many application level functions into the OS so that it it easier to complete certain goals although it makes my system more vulnerable but that is a calculated risk. I have to think about that.

For the record, your question was, "What can Linux do for the thinking people that the other OSes lack." I merely separated Windows and Mac OS from the other OSes and grouped them --except Mac OS which I stated that i have not tried to install or configure for some time and asked Laff for a hand there-- with Linux. Aside from that, we had asked the same question. Of course I answered the question. I had restructured and asked it on your behalf.

Now if you want to take Windows out of the picture and ask, "What can Linux do for the thinking people that the other non-Windows OSes lack," that would be harder. Let's get the Linux shills and the BSD shills and the Mac OSX shills to beat that one out.

No, I don't think that Windows applies to versatility, configurability, stability, uptime. Certainly not to the extent as all the others. Windows is somewhat configurable for thinking people but even then not near as highly configurable as the other OSes. It is not very versatile, it is not very stable although thinking people can make it less unstable than the OOBE.

It certainly does not have the uptime that most others enjoy especially considering that almost every security update requires a reboot while most *nix kernels can be rebuilt on the fly with no reboot required most of the time. Notice here I am talking about maintenance, not, "whoops, I got another virus!"

That, some might say, is unfair since Windows is targeted more, "because it is more widespread," and not because it is simply more vulnerable due to integrating end-user apps into the system OS. I am not one of those who would say it is unfair for various reasons. Not time nor place to discuss.... Moving on.

Oh, wait, no, let's not move on. The rest of your post is so not worthy of response. You almost remind me of Anton's logic. Don't jump to conclusions with no support. Especially do not take my statements out of context to state a conclusion that I did not even allude to as if you heard it straight from my mouth.

Lack of knowledge lends itself to an anability to ponder a situation and make a decision. Don't ask me to think about the best approach to treat a brain aneurhism. I have no knowledge there. It doesn't make me stupid, only ignorant on the topic. Many end-users do not know a lot about the Mac or Windows but they know a whole bunch about tort reform and quantum physics and stem cell research and a great deal of other things. I never called anyone stupid. I simply suggested...

You know what? I'm wasting my time.
