What can the Penguin do for you?
What, pray tell, can Linux do for thinking people that the other OSes lack?
I like to ask, "what can the other OSes do for the thinking people that Windows lack?"

Answer, versatility, configurability, stability, uptime. The problem is that to benefit from the versatility and configurability, you have to think. You have to understand how computers work to make desisions like how big a temp partition you need, how large a boot partition do you need or a usr/ partition. Do you need to separate your var/, usr/ and etc/ into separate partitions or not? How big do you need them?

These things help in the speed and efficiency of the system and aid in maintenance but if you do not know what you are doing, accept the default. Windows doesn't even offer those choices to the end user on install. Even if it did or if you know enough about OSes and hardware to setup your system better than the MS defaults, it is still not as configurable as the others including Linux distros, Unix distros, BSD distros, Netware and OS/2. I never configured a Mac so I cannot speak there. Hey, Laff, does Pagan Jim have input on this?

Hence the thinking people would prefer Linux and the other OSes over Windows.
Will the world's 'thinking' index go up over the next few?
No. That is one reason Windows sells. That is also the reason why many are turned off of Linux. It is also the reason that us Linux guys keep saying that Linux needs to become more user friendly. What we mean by 'user friendly' is 'end-user' friendly and I use the term 'end-user' here in the sence used in IT venacular, a derogatory term refering to the guy who calls you up to ask, "How do I create a shortcut to this document on my desktop? I know how to do it in WindowsMe but you gave me WindowsXP. At least you said you did but my wife has WindowsXP on her home computer and this doesn't even look the same!"

Nevertheless, the amount of guys like me have not fallen over the past few, either but now we have choice again and Linux user-share will keep going up. I use the term, 'user-share,' as distinct from, 'market-share,' since the number of units of Linux, BSD, etc sold in the percieved market is less than the number of units acquired or in use. Furthermore, the number of units of Windows sold, including OEM installs, is greater than the number of units in use since many are Bay Windows (WinXP -> Win2K downgrades, Win boxes replacements with Win boxes, Win -> *nix crossgrades, etc.).

Us curious people are joining the waiting people for the thinking peoples answer.
You can be curious and think at the same time. Hope this helped. Otherwise, don't hurt yourself. Re-read slowly. wink
