The reasons for Novell's losing streak
can be debated for all times. But Microsoft gained nothing because they had a better product. They simply convinced the uneducated users of IT they were better. And the uneducated users were able to setup Windows easier than other choices. Of course, this is why Windows has become eat up with worms and viruses. Instead of the users becoming educated, they took the easy way out and now the carnage is the result.

And now, as the industry matures and the users become more educated, they are looking for alternatives. Microsoft can no longer buffalo the user. But when your whole IT investment is in one vendors products, changing to a superior product is a daunting task.

Netware was always superior to Windows. I worked on a customers Windows workstation who also runs Novell at the server. The server had been up and running flawlessly for 455 days. Microsoft has never produced anything that even comes close to that type of stability. The Directory services of Novell is so far superior to AD that the two aren't even in the same class. And Word Perfect was and is heads above Word.

Microsoft was in the right place at the right time with the right line of rhetoric and half truths to get where they are. They have never had the best of anything.
