There are two theories
The reason that many corps have moved to Web-based apps is that updating client apps has been too hard. Bad MSFT! But moving to Web-based apps comes at a price. They're usually slower, don't work offline and lack the ricness that many client applications offer. The goal is to have the richness, speed and offline capabilities of client apps with the ease of maintenance of Web-based apps. I know, easier said than done. I know that MSFT is coming out with something they call "Click Once" with the next version of the .NET Framework and VS 2005 that supposedly moves in the right direction. Installation by the end users requires a single click on a link and the app downloads. If the developer makes an udpate to the app to fix a but or add a new capability, only those components that are updated need to be installed. We'll see if it works.

I personally would rather have the best of both worlds. Relying solely on Web-based applications sucks IMHO.
