Good question
The Web is great. TCP/IP, HTML...all wonderful. But those old protocols don't solve today's problems. Web browser's are basically equivalent to the old dumb terminals: they display "pictures" of data but doing anything interesting with the data is complex. Web services protocols and technologies like Indigo are designed to make the Web programmable. They make it possible for different applications - regardless of the platform - to share/exchange data and conduct business. There are some good examples of this already. Amazon exposes their "storefront" as a set of Web services that other companies can "consume" because they're based on Web services standards.

Indigo is not some evil plot of Microsoft's. All they're doing is building in these Web services capabilities so that apps that run on Windows (client or server) can exchange data with each other easily and with apps running on other platforms. There's nothing scary about this.
