..From this perspective, what special whiz-bang communications do we need on the desktop?...

We don't.
What SOA is all about is providing a WWW of functionality, via webservices, that can be consumed very easily by a desktop app.
By standardizing Webservices, interop is covered so implementation is abstracted just like the real WWW.
So to build a fully functional web enabled desktop app becomes easier as you simply subscribe to the webservices and only have to implement the UI.

Services: In theory the original goals of EDI could be fullfilled by SOA.
Anything done with a browser can be replaced with a more 'better' desktop app.
This could provide for 2nd generation Internet apps that could eventually replace the browsers we use today just like eBooks have replaced the paperback happy

It's mainly about standards and formalizing the framework.
Don't hold your breath.
