Can somebody help here?
These days I just don't have time to keep up with the details of technology, but I do spend a lot of time in conference with large private and public organizations. What I hear on a near-daily basis is a strong move to Service Oriented Architecture, generally focussed on web services.

From this perspective, what special whiz-bang communications do we need on the desktop? If the desktop client can communicate with the web now, with no special knowledge or talent required, what does this new capability bring, in a practical sense?

Thanks
