I doubt IBM is trying to switch users to AIX.
It gains so much by having cross-platform support for Linux (x86, PPC/PPC-64, Itanium, 390).
It can then migrate you up the line to 390 if required. You can downscale to x86 also.
With AIX, you're stuck on a PPC.
