I know this one company that gives away free stuff
to college students, mother's at daycares, people at gyms, highschool students, ESL students,... why they seem to give away to almost everyone! All in the name of increasing corporate profits.

You never accept free samples in the mail, do you? Giving away free products or products at hugh discounts to encourage sales and in direct competition with commercial products has been done for years. The difference between that and MS is that the GPL does not force you to not use certain softwaer like MS forced on the world at large through its OEM programs and other underhanded marketing schemes.

(See how I easily turned this into an anti-MS debate wink

My point is not "anti-MS" but that it is okay and encouraged by the GPL that Sun and others uses GPL software.
For example, you do know that Linux's main effect has been on Unix, right? That's not a coincidence.
Think of Microsoft as a flag waved to encourage the fans. The real significance, the real focus is on making increased profits in the Unix world.
Care to elaborate and make sence of this? What did you mean by "main effect" for instance? Now let's see. There are Sun OS and Solaris by Sun, there is IRIX by SGI, there is AIX by IBM and then there are the BSD's including UC BSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD then there are the Linux distros,...

Oh yes, there is also OpenUnix by TSG. Where are these increased profits being felt? Which Unix distros? Are not the Linux Distros profiting? Where are the stats? What do they really mean?

Never mind, forget I even asked.
