To forestall appeal
I'm afraid I have to agree. This is the only way to forestall, not only SCO's troubling us again in the future, but also additional similar legal actions by other parasites on creativity that would likely follow unless a strong and complete legal precedent against it is set by this case. In fact, I think we will see additional attempts of the SCO type no matter what happens, but they will be fewer and weaker if SCO is soundly and completely defeated in this case.

The "great gray machine" of IBM knows how this game is played. We know it, too, but we, or least many of us, instinctively rebel against it as contrary to sense and a waste of time -- sort of like meetings with pointy-haired bosses taken to the extreme.

It seems, for now, that we are fortunate to have such an expert and wealthy friend on "our" side. Who knows that we may not find ourselves one day regretting the IBM alliance, but it's working for now.
