You drove'em, I worked on them. You just really don't know and have only began to scratch the surface on what total POS's these cars were. Detroit thought they had a captive market in the US and could get by sending out the most godawful stuff to the dealers.
We had one Fairmont come into the Ford dealer that had problems with the doors not properly shutting on one side. The pillar post was set back 4 inches and the union guys on the assembly line had set the hinges, cobbled the strikers and set the front fender amazingly so that the doors would set in place just well enough to get it out the door.
A Ford Granada had a rear window leak. The window opening was one inch higher on the passenger side than it was on the driver side. By judicious cutting of a wedge strip out of a tire and some silicone caulk, we got it sealed. When you opened the hood up front, on the passenger side there was all sort of bracketry that was spot welded only on one side, there was a 1/2 to 3/4 gap on the other that they just left. No wonder it rattled and squeeked going over bumps, the passenger side of the car was just waiting to fall in the ditch.
Ford truck differential units were another nightmare. Their equipment for making hypoid gears had been let go to the point that you could open up a brand new rear end and measure twelve thousandths or more runout on the ring gear. No wonder they howled.
Shortly thereafter I went to work on Japanese cars and never looked back. I could take no pride in "Made in USA".
