- A different take on your position

You're absolutely correct that Linux has fewer hardware
drivers than windows. But for the NHS is this really a
problem? In such an enormous organisation do you want
the staff plugging in their latest USB device?
Maybe they want thin clients that have a tightly lock-down
version of an OS with superior anti-virus/malware
protection built-in. Maybe 90% of their users simply require
a robust GUI OS with email, web, word processing and
spreadsheet and the ability to walk around the hospital and
log into their account from any terminal. And just maybe
the NHS would appreciate the hundreds of pounds save per
license.
Please, someone tell our UK friends to also look into open-
source alternatives as well. They are big enough to roll out
their own Linux-Gnome-OpenOffice-Evolution-Java
desktop as alternative to Sun's closed project, perhaps
based around the ltsp. By contributing their work back to
the community we might be able to benefit from such a
solution in the Australian public hospital system. - Posted by: Richard Flude Posted on: 12/08/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
