China can cripple the US tomorrow if required, but they havent
The US funds budget over-runs partially by printing 1.5 trillion dollars of new money every year. This would be deflationary to the tune of 15%.
China and Japan have purchased vast amounts of dollars over the years.
If either country simply stopped buying dollars (they wouldn't even have to sell any of their reserve), the US would go into financial meltdown.

But they don't. Why? I think the chinese are reasonably happy with their life at the moment. Their exports are great, and their quality of life per individual is rising phenomenally.
Sure they play business hard ball style, like the russians (ok probably not as bad as the russians).
But that's life. Maybe we'd lived through crap like the cultural revolution, we would be kind of desperate for wealth and lifestyle.
