...MS charges for the OS itself, not for a few additions like the zip folders. Plus, the zip compression source was released as public domain, but not GPL'ed. So, this in particular, is quite legal. If it is GPL, though, then you're right, they should share the source.

Red Hat and Suse sell the support they provide with their distros. It is in this respect that they can sell GPL'ed software and why people would prefer commercial distros to free ones.

Both of them sell something, and both of them offer something along with the product. Provided the zip cource is not GPL'ed, there's nothing wrong with the zip folders.
