The non-openness of their "open" format belies the dinosaur underneath
If microsoft supported an underlying open
document format (like OpenOffice.org), you know i
might actually think it was a good idea to use
Microsoft word since it might not be a bad
implementation of something talking a standard
file format.
Well maybe if they fixed picture positioning, and
got rid of all that auto crap.
Similarily, I'd be quite happy to use Windows
Media Player if it worked well with Oggs and
Windows Movie Maker if it played with Theora
video format.

But at the moment, various companies still think
delusionally that they can lock up the file
formats of the world, and force people to use
their software.

I wish Microsoft would sort out a new business
model. Their frantic thrashing around with
proprietary this and proprietary that, all the
time missing the point is tiresome. They could
achieve so much if they go through an IBM88
moment. (IBM88 was when IBM threw away their
incompatability with anything that wasn't their
own proprietary technology in favour of open
standards).
