One possible reason for departure
Open source starts as a philosophy and believers produce software. Seeing their chance, companies take over and benefit from the free / collaborative work. What started as opposition to commercialism has become highly commercial.

If you believe in the philosophy, would you hang around in a prominent position, given what your brainchild has become?

Okay, he hasn't turned against open source. But I expect never to hear him insistently complimenting IBM for its contributions.
