I don't know if I agree...
...concerning Bill Gates. In his case, I believe it was the opposite. In many ways, Bill Gates became bigger than Microsoft. Even today, years after the change, ABMers call Gates Satan, not Allan. Bill Gates may very well have stepped aside to deflect some of the negative press from the company.

...concerning Eric Raymond, I am not so sure that OSI is bigger than him either. I could see that he would like to be more of a philosopher than business man. I could see that after so many years devoted to this one idea, he might want to pursue other interests. I do not see that OSI or the OSS movement has outgrown Eric Raymond. When this happens, you usually see the project the leader in involved with begin to stagnate. OSS is growing faster than ever.

I do see as interesting here the fact that ER's resignation comes pretty much on the heels of the approval of Sun's CDDL. If I were to look deeper than the press release into this issue, I would look there first. It may be that ER was opposed to fragmenting OSS with so many competing licenses where OSS code cannot be mingled. It does kind of violate the overall philosophy of the ERs and RMSs of the OSS world.
