Simple
part of the downfall of Rome was due to the failure to keep separate church and state. Not the sole reason but a part of. Plus there are many good people of strong moral character in the US and world that have no set foundation for religion. And to enforce a standard (christianity in the US) religion upon all peoples via the government takes away the very foundation of this nation. The freedom to worship as we see fit.

A government it to be impartial in it's views of religious preference and belief unless it is a Theocracy. We are a Republic with Democratic process. Laws and constitutions based on the univeral freedoms of mankind drives our government... well it used to.
