In small doses, nothing
Government can't tax you on it!

I kind of like not having to build my own roads, hunt down thieves, put out fires, build schools, build hospitals, build parks, PREVENT EVIL MONOPOLISTIC COMPANIES FROM TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ME wink, etc. If we went back to a pure barter system we would either have to a) do all these things ourselves or b) pay someone else to do it for us. I don't like a) and b) is the system we have today which you obviously don't like.

The other huge problem with the barter system is if I have chickens to sell and I want to buy your milk but you want to buy wool, I have to find someone with wool who wants my chickens so I can have your milk. The system as a whole is EXTREMELY inefficient.

Like I said, in small doses there is nothing wrong with the barter system. It would be a huge step backwards for our civilization to fall back into it wholesale though. I have no fears it would ever happen and my original post was 95% in jest but at least it got 2 well thought out responses. happy
