Yes, I remember something...
"One thing that was missed though. What was it that MS bought for Win NT? I read about it years ago but for the life of me can't remember."

I remember reading something along these lines quite a while back, but I can't remember exactly what it was. I'm thinking that it had to do with MS buying some file system technology from IBM for the NTFS file system, but I can't find any references to this. This would make sense, since IBM had the experience with Big League file systems for their mainframes.

However, rest assured that there's loads of technology from IBM, DEC and even good 'ol Seattle Computer Products in each and every Microsoft offering. I've heard more than one Old Timer Code Guy complain that the reason Microsoft isn't able to fix their products is that major portions of their products (particularly the really tricky bits) weren't written by them.
