So your problem is with your support vendor, choose someone else
"Oh, sorry, we cannot help you."

Then what are you paying support for (or are you
expecting to get everything for nothing)? If you use 2.2
then you should be getting support from someone that can
help you with this version. As stated in the original post
unlike closed source OSes the full source code for your
Linux kernel has been provided to you. You are not forced
to update as you would be for say when windows 98
becomes unsupported.

"Maybe not forcing your hand, but making is very difficult."

The reality of life is things change. It might be difficult to
find support for 2.2 or do it yourself but it is an option.
These difficulties might influence your decision but you are
not being forced to do anything by the kernel team.

"Is this rapid deployment to 2.6 anything more than an
economic engine being fired up?"

The latest kernel is a big change from 2.4, offering
significant improvements in particular for SMP servers. It is
unrealistic to think this can all be ported back to 2.4.
