Manufacturers must protect their installed base. If your system begins to fail or look uncompetitive, the customer does't know or care whether it's your hardware or OS. All they know is that it's time to look at the competition - since all runs Linux, the choices are abundant. No, the conributors won't allow a current version of the OS to go bad - the cost would be unacceptable.

MS popular? You need to get out more. Maybe the people you work and recreate with are turned on by computer software, but when you look elsewhere...American flags, local high school and college colors, George W. Bush (popular or not on roughly a daily basis), Julia Roberts...there is where popularity has a meaning. Our financial guys' eyes glaze over when we start to talk about the "wonderfulness" of computer stuff. They want to see value for cost over time. Forget "popular."
